Lisa has supported birthing families for the past seven years as a birth doula, mentor and student midwife. Initially, DONA trained and certified, Lisa later trained as a Birthing From Within™ mentor and birth doula before transitioning into independent birth doula practice in 2017 to embrace her role in the YYC birth community as a full spectrum, Holistic Birth Consultant, through The Matrona.
Lisa will be taking clients as a Registered Midwife in Fall of 2020.
Midwifery is a full spectrum vocation. It’s the personal, the political – the reclaiming and stewarding of sovereignty without apology. It’s made up of threshold moments, archetypes and acts of will that honour conception, contraception, pregnancy, abortion, birth and death.
Her professional birth philosophy acknowledges and upholds the human rights of women & birthing people to make autonomous, meaningful decisions about the circumstances in which they access care and give birth. She believes that optimal maternity care exists when birthing people have access to a full spectrum of choice and are unequivocally supported to navigate their pregnancies and births utilizing whatever modalities that are relevant to them, without being presented the burden of a one “right choice”. She operates under the paradigm that the role of the birth-keeper is one of consultation and information sharing, while the birthing parent maintains full responsibility for determining the best course of action. Upon graduation from her Bachelor’s Of Midwifery program, Lisa is determined to practice right’s based, abortion positive, queer and trans-inclusive, trauma-informed midwifery that reflects a transfer of power back to the family while providing the support and skill necessary to walk with families through all outcomes and circumstances of birth.
Outside of her birth work, Lisa is a proud mother of three small humans and wife to her amazing partner. She loves gardening, wild fermentation, loud music, knitted sweaters, reading books & drinking coffee around fireplaces.
